Trims and Powertrains

Lexus offers two flavors of the ES, the 250 and the 350 (with trim upgrades that are detailed below). The ES 250 has an all-wheel drivetrain and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 203 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The ES 350 is strictly front-wheel drive and comes with a 3.5-liter V6 producing 302 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque. Both powerplants are managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The EPA-estimated fuel economy ranges from 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway for the ES 250 to 22 city/32 highway for the ES 350 (the highway fuel efficiency for the ES 359 F Sport changes to 31 mpg).

Standard Features, Trim Upgrades, and Options

Regardless of the powertrain, the base 2023 Lexus ES gets a power moonroof, NuLuxe-trimmed seating, Bi-LED headlights, LED taillights and daytime running lights, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and ten-way power front seats. The ES 250 and ES 350 also have power side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a tri-mode driving selector, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, a multi-information driver display, a rear seat trunk pass-through, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The Premium Package is a popular upgrade for the base ES. It adds heated and ventilated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a driver’s memory system, a power tilt/telescopic steering column, easy-entry positioning (the driver’s seat and steering wheel automatically move to allow for more convenient entry and exit), wireless device charging, power-folding side mirrors with a tilt-down-in-reverse feature, rain-sensing windshield wipers with a de-icing feature, and assistive parking features (described below).

More premium features come with the Luxury upgrade that’s available with the ES 250 and ES 350. The upscale touches include everything from the Premium Package contents plus quilted and perforated semi-aniline leather upholstery, a heated wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel, a driver’s seat with a power cushion extender and 14-way power adjustments, a power rear sunshade, wood trim with ambient lighting, performance dampers, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Ultra Luxury grouping (ES 250 or ES 350) builds off the Luxury upgrade by adding a power open/close trunk with a kick sensor, a head-up display, and technology upgrades (which are covered later). Some additional options for the Luxury and Ultra Luxury include a panoramic glass roof (ES 350 only), triple-beam LED headlights, and a rear spoiler.

The well-regarded F SPORT high-performance line is offered on the ES in two forms. The F SPORT Design begins with an ES 250 or ES 350 with the Premium Package and adds unique exterior styling elements with 19-inch gloss black-finish wheels. Exclusive to the ES 350 is the F SPORT Handling upgrade, which includes F SPORT Design features plus an adaptive variable suspension, performance dampers, additional driving modes, performance instrumentation, active noise control, exclusive interior treatments with aluminum accents, and bolstered heated and ventilated front seats.

Safety and Assistive Technology

The Lexus Safety System 2.5+ is standard across the ES lineup. This collection of advanced driver aids includes pre-collision technology with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking (along with pedestrian and bicyclist detection and left-turn intersection support), lane departure alert with steering assist, enhanced lane tracing assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and road sign assist. Intuitive Parking Assist with automatic braking is part of the Premium Package and comes with all ES versions (except the base). An upgraded version of this parking support system includes a surround-view monitor and rear pedestrian detection; it’s included with the Ultra Luxury and optional with the Luxury and F SPORT Handling.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Lexus installs an 8-inch touchscreen to control the infotainment system in the ES. It also has a ten-speaker sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports. A 12.3-inch touchscreen is available on all versions above the base and is included with the Ultra Luxury. A Mark Levinson 17-speaker audio system is optional on all ES variations except the base. ES owners also receive access to connected services for a Wi-Fi hotspot, cloud navigation, destination assist, and the “Hey Lexus” Intelligent Assistant. The Lexus smartphone app provides remote engine start, service scheduling, vehicle status reports, and more.
