2025 Lexus GX 550

The Lexus GX 550 enters its second year after a comprehensive redesign for the 2024 model year. This full-sized SUV combines a rugged body-on-frame platform with upscale amenities, making it well-suited for off-road adventures and extended road trips. For 2025, Lexus has added more standard features across the lineup, including a one-inch suspension lift for the Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims. All grades also get a driver’s memory system and a power-adjustable steering column.

The GX’s robust foundation contributes to its off-road capabilities, particularly in the Overtrail and Overtrail+, as those trims are designed for tackling tougher terrain. The cabin offers a high level of comfort and convenience, with premium materials, advanced technology features, and numerous storage solutions. Thanks to flexibility in the GX’s seating layout, buyers also have options for five-, six-, or seven-passenger configurations.

Trims, Powertrain, and Cargo Capacity

Lexus offers the 2025 GX 550 in six trims: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail, and Overtrail+. All versions are powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine making 349 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. A ten-speed automatic transmission manages the standard full-time all-wheel-drive system.

The EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings are the same across the board: 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. Towing capacity ranges from 7,601 to 9,096 pounds, depending on the trim. Cargo capacity depends on the seating configuration (up to seven passengers for most trims, while the Overtrail editions can transport five people). There is 10.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, while the two-row variants offer 45.6 cubic feet. Behind the front row, cargo room expands to 76.9 cubic feet in the three-row editions, while the Overtrail and Overtrail+ can handle 90.5 cubic feet of goods.

Standard Features

The GX Premium hits the roads and trails with a comprehensive list of standard equipment, including seating for seven, a power moonroof, eight-way power front seats (heated and ventilated), NuLuxe leatherette upholstery, a driver’s memory system, a power liftgate, LED headlamps, and a Torsen limited-slip center differential. It also has a 12.3-inch driver information display, power-folding side mirrors, running boards, ambient cabin lighting, a 120-volt AC power outlet in the cargo area, a tow hitch receiver, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, six USB ports, and 20-in alloy wheels. The Premium+ adds a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power tailgate, heated second-row outboard seats, a power-folding third-row bench, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, LED fog lamps, enhanced ambient cabin lighting, and wireless device charging.

The Luxury gives the GX a more upscale vibe thanks to semi-aniline leather upholstery, a ten-way heated and ventilated driver’s seat, a massage feature for the front seats, puddle lamps (on the exterior mirrors), second-row sunshades, illuminated door sills, and 22-inch alloy wheels. Meanwhile, the Luxury+ edition goes further upmarket with a panoramic glass roof, an adaptive variable suspension, automatic power running boards, a cooled storage compartment, and a digital rearview mirror. Second-row captain’s chairs (for six-passenger seating) are optional on the Premium+, Luxury, and Luxury+.

The already rugged GX gains increased off-road prowess with the Overtrail. This trail-hungry trim is based on the Premium but hosts seating for five and gets a one-inch suspension lift, an adaptive suspension system with electronic kinetic dynamic functionality, an electronic rear locking differential, crawl control, downhill assist control, multi-terrain select, and aluminum front skid plates. It also has a heated steering wheel, LED fog lamps, headlamp washers, a windshield wiper de-icer, four USB ports, and 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch alloy wheels. The Overtrail+ adds a deluxe touch with a ten-way heated and ventilated driver’s seat, front-seat massage, a hands-free power tailgate, heated second-row outboard seats, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, puddle lamps, enhanced ambient cabin lighting, wireless device charging, second-row sunshades, and illuminated door sills.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

The Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is standard in every 2025 GX. Its technologies consist of forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, adaptive cruise control with lane-tracing assist, automatic high beams, traffic sign recognition, and proactive driving assist (supportive technology to enhance distance control). All trims also have blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and semi-autonomous parking support with automatic braking. The Premium+ and above also get a surround-view monitor (with a multi-terrain mode on the Overtrail and Overtrail+). Rear pedestrian detection and parking assist with automatic braking are standard with all trims except the Premium and Overtrail. Lexus includes a full array of airbags on all trims, along with antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a rearview monitor.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Lexus Interface infotainment system is managed through a 14-inch high-resolution touchscreen and is accompanied by wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, cloud-based navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and access to connected services. A ten-speaker sound system is standard on most trims, with an upgrade to a 21-speaker Mark Levinson arrangement on the Luxury+ and Overtrail+ (it’s optional for the Luxury).
