The Lexus RX raises the bar for the luxury utility vehicle segment. It has everything that someone with high expectations could want from a vehicle. This includes things like a quiet, comfortable, and roomy interior with a class-leading 32.7 cubic feet of cargo space, plenty of top-shelf features, and aggressive sporty styling elements that fit with the times. For model year ‘21, the RX now gets standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and power-folding auto-dimming side mirrors. Wireless smartphone charging is now available as well.
Trims and Powertrain
The ’21 RX is sold in three trim levels: RX, RX F Sport, and RXL. Under the hood of all three is a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 295 hp and 268 lb.-ft. of torque in the first two trims and 290 hp and 263 lb.-ft. of torque with the RXL. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic transmission, and there’s a choice of either front- or all-wheel drive. Most of the FWD models return an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, while the majority of AWD versions achieve 19 city/26 highway. The only exception is the RXL, where the FWD versions gets 19 city/26 highway and the AWD version gets 18 city/25 highway.

The 20-inch wheels are available, as are most of the optional contents listed above for the RX. The only trim-exclusive available item is second-row captain’s chairs.
Safety and Technology
All three 20201 RX trims are equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 suite of active driver aids, consisting of a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control, and intelligent high beams. They all get a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert as well. Intuitive parking assist with automatic braking and rear cross-traffic braking is available for all trims.

2021 RX Trims

Among its standard features are Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Amazon Alexa, HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker sound system. For driver-assist technology, the RX gets the base version of the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 (pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams). Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard.

Upgrades for the infotainment system include integrated navigation, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and either a 12-speaker or a 15-speaker Mark Levinson sound system. The exterior is eligible for auto-leveling and adaptive triple-beam LED headlights, side mirrors with memory, a moonroof or a panoramic glass roof, aluminum roof rails, a hands-free liftgate, 20-inch wheels, and a windshield wiper de-icer. Intuitive parking assist with automatic braking and rear cross-traffic braking can be added as well.
RX F Sport
The F Sport has a more athletic appearance than the base-level RX. Its front bumper and mesh grille insert is unique to the trim, as are its badging, black exterior mirror housings, and dark-finished 20-inch wheels. The cabin has beautiful aluminum trim, a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, front seats with upgraded bolsters, an instrument cluster with a performance-inspired G-meter, aluminum kick pedals and door-sill scuff plates, and a black headliner.
Most of the options mentioned as available for the base RX are also offered for the F Sport. The F Sport also qualifies for a Black Line Special Edition Package, which bundles a black grille surround, a body-side graphic, black seats with white accents and blue stitching, unique mats and key gloves, and a set of Zero Haliburton Edge Lightweight Travel Cases.
The RXL reverts to 18-inch wheels and adds aluminum roof rails, a hidden exhaust, a third-row seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, and second-row USB ports. The 20-inch wheels can be added back as an option, and most of the previously mentioned available a la carte features are still offered. The only upgrade that’s exclusive to the RXL is a pair of second-row captain’s chairs in lieu of the standard bench seat.
