The appeal for luxury sedans is undeniable: they’re exceedingly comfortable, well appointed, and sleek. One of the leading models in the premium sedan segment is the 2020 Lexus ES; it’s fuel efficient, strikingly stylish, attractively priced, and outfitted with a potent V6 engine that’s anything but cookie-cutter. Competing with it, though, are similarly excellent four-doors like the Acura TLX, Infiniti Q50, Lincoln MKZ, and Volvo S60. Even though it might seem like the 2020 Lexus ES has its work cut out for it, we’re here to show you how it outdoes those rivals in a few critical ways.
Fuel Economy and Power
Sedans are in general more fuel-efficient than other vehicle styles. The 2020 Lexus ES is a prime example of this, as it returns up to 22 mpg around town and 32 mpg on the highway with its standard 3.6-liter V6 (not all of the models listed on this page come standard with a V6). The base models of the TLX (20 city/31 highway), Q50 (20 city/29 highway), and MKZ (20 city/31 highway) are less fuel efficient in comparison. The only model that outdoes the 2020 Lexus ES is the S60 with its EPA mileage ratings of 23 city/34 highway, although that difference is minor and the car falls short in other areas of comparison. Additionally, even though the 2020 Lexus ES has one of the most fuel-efficient engines, it’s also one of the most robust, whisking out 302 horsepower. The TLX’s optional V6 makes 290 hp, while the Q50’s V6 makes 300 hp, and the base S60’s four-cylinder puts out 250 hp (it doesn’t offer a V6). The MKZ’s V6 is more powerful with an output of 350 hp, but that engine isn’t standard.
If you take frequent trips and need to carry more than one person’s luggage, you’ll appreciate that the 2020 Lexus ES is more accommodating than its rivals. It provides 16.7 cubic feet of cargo space, whereas the TLX only provides 14.3 cu. ft., the Q50 13.5 cu. ft., the MKZ 15.4 cu. ft., and the S60 11.6 cu. ft.
Lexus Safety System+ 2.0
Lexus’s comprehensive active safety technology suite is standard on all trim levels of the 2020 Lexus NX. This includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control, and intelligent high beams. The Acura TLX lacks road sign assist. The base Infiniti Q50 has standard forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, but buyers will need to upgrade with a package to enjoy any other driver aids. Lincoln only supplies forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams on the MKZ. Even though the base Volvo S60 receives many of the same active safety aids as the 2020 Lexus ES, it doesn’t receive standard adaptive cruise control or automatic high beams. To get those conveniences, you’ll need to pay extra for an optional package.
