Trim Levels, Powertrain, and Performance

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 is a full-sized, body-on-frame SUV that’s presented in six trim grades: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail, and Overtrail+. As mentioned, the power source is a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 engine that puts out 349 hp and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel drive system with a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential make up the rest of the mechanical big picture. With most trims, the maximum towing capacity is 8,000 pounds, and all trims are estimated by the EPA to return 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.

Standard Amenities

The seven-passenger Premium is set up with top-shelf standard equipment, including triple-beam LED headlights, power-folding side mirrors, a moonroof, a tow hitch receiver, NuLuxe upholstery, power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, USB-C ports, a 12.3-inch multi-information display, and a 120V power outlet. The Premium+ adds LED fog lights, a hands-free liftgate, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, a more sophisticated ambient interior lighting system (Thematic Ambient Illumination), position memory settings (for the driver’s seat, side mirrors, and steering wheel), a wireless phone charger, heated outboard second-row seats, and power-folding third-row seats.

The Luxury earns its name with leather upholstery, massaging front seats, and manually controlled second-row sunshades. The Luxury+ adds power-extending running boards, the Dynamic Sky panoramic glass roof, a digital rearview mirror, a cooler box, and an adaptive variable suspension.

The ruggedized Overtrail resembles the Premium+, but it drops the third-row seat, reducing passenger capacity to five. It also goes without the power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, hands-free liftgate, Thematic Ambient Illumination, position memory settings, wireless phone charger, and heated outboard second-row seats. Instead, it receives a slew of trail-oriented additions: 33-inch all-terrain tires, a windshield wiper de-icer, headlamp washers, a fast-response interior heater, a more dynamic suspension, an electronically controlled locking rear differential, Crawl Control with Turn Assist (which acts as an off-road cruise control system), downhill assist control, and Multi-Terrain Select drive modes. The Overtrail+ has all of that, plus the list of equipment omitted in the regular Overtrail.

Advanced Safety Features

Every trim level of the redesigned 2024 GX receives the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite. It bundles all-speed dynamic radar cruise control with curve speed management, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and intersection support, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, automatic high beams, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Active parking assist with automatic braking is standard across the board as well, and in all but the Premium and Overtrail it’s accompanied by rear pedestrian detection. Most trims also get a panoramic-view monitor, with a Multi-Terrain Monitor added to the Overtrail and Overtrail+.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The latest version of the Lexus Interface multimedia system is found in all GX trims. It consists of a 14-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The base audio system has 10 speakers, but the Luxury+ is improved with a 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound system. GX buyers also receive a three-year trial to the Drive Connect service, which provides Cloud Navigation, Intelligent Assistant voice recognition, and Destination Assist.

Optional Equipment

With the available Cold Weather Package for the Premium, Premium+, Luxury, and Luxury+, the GX will be outfitted with a windshield wiper de-icer, headlamp washers, a fast-response interior heater, and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel. Some of the other elective features include Digital Key, heated second-row captain’s chairs (reducing seating capacity to six in the three-row versions), traffic jam assist, a 10.7-inch head-up display, a cargo-area tonneau cover, and a two-tone exterior treatment.
